Submit Your Site to Search Engines and Directories - It all starts here. If you don’t start submitting your site to major search engines, it’s likely that it will take a long (long) time for them to find it on their own.
I recently received the following question from a fellow marketing consultant over at LinkedIn: Do you think a small medium business web site should include the physical address and photos of the owner(s)? The best way to promote your website is to register on a web directory or link directory. These directories on the web specialize in making connections to websites and listing the connections. A web directory differs from a search engine in that it does not display lists of web pages based on a chosen list of words entered by the searcher. It will list websites by their category and subcategory across the whole web rather than a single page or the search words. Most World Wide Web directories permit the website owners to submit their own categorizations which are reviewed by the editors for fitness.
To further site promotion a website owner/manager should understand the workings of the Open Directory Project and below is a brief explanation of its development and aims. For the amateur/cash strapped webmaster, it is the prime directory.
If you are reading this you should by now have been accepted into the largest directories and through dint of this be having pages of your site come up in answer to searches done performed with the major search engines. This is the ’stick a fork in it; it’s done’ level of website creation. Congratulations, you have by now set up a successful website that is attracting increasing numbers of visitors, repeat visitors and hopefully sales - if your site is a commercial one. Just because this part of the job is done does not mean that you can sit back and wait for the money to roll in on a never-to-be-altered site again. Similarly, there is plenty of extra work that you can do to attract higher visitor numbers.
Webmasters may well choose only to use The Open Directory Project (ODP) due to it be a free listing directory, but if you do want to ensure a wide audience and listing then there are few better options than Yahoo! It has grown rapidly in recent years and its recent association with a possible Microsoft buy out has only increased its renown. It is the undisputed market leader in the directory market and prices have risen reflecting its superiority; it is also becoming harder to submit to it.
Ezine marketing is good, and can even be very effective if the right ezine is targeted. They are good for short-term traffic, but not long-term traffic…
